McDonald’s Japan and Ebi-chan

Posted By yonghow on October 13th, 2007

Model Ebihara Yuri 蛯原友里 ( known affectionately as Ebi-chan here in Japan ) strikes a pose with the Roasted Sesame Ebi Filet-O Shrimp Burger which went on sale last week.

Celebrity product endorsement in Japan is insanely saturated, with every major brand represented by a popular face on television. Ebi-chan, whose zillion appearances on the covers of hip fashion magazines made her very popular among young women ( and men ), was probably chosen to bring a younger and fresher feel to the burger chain, and also because her name “EBI-hara” conveniently sounds the same as “Ebi” ( 海老 shrimp ).

You can watch the television commercial for the burger, an interview with her regarding the making of the commercial, even download wallpapers of the above poster at Mcdonald’s Japan website.

The local McDonald’s in Ogikubo, near our studio.

Also unique to Mcdonald’s in Japan is the 100 Yen ( about S$1.30) McPork burger, definitely cheap by Tokyo standards and a rather tasty filler in between meals. It would be quite unthinkable for such a burger to appear in Singapore ( all fast food chains serve only HALAL food ).

I think MacD’s here used to sell a pork burger called 猪肉王 or something. I think it was around 1987? It was the year that my primary school arranged an excursion to the Road Safety Park at East Coast. I remember having that burger after that trip….

Damn. I wonder why I can remember such things?

I think I will take a long time to die…since the flashback will be so long.

Mmm… Looks artificial. Both.

Zero – I think I have a faint memory of that burger you mentioned too…haha…only for folks our generation I guess.

nyuudo – Hmm… Artificial, but still nice. :]

I find that Macdonalds in Japan is much cheaper than the Macdonalds in Singapore. One meal here costs around 6 singapore dollars.

I remember last year when I was in Akihabara, I spent till I didn’t have enough cash on me to eat anything except Macdonalds. Lunch and Dinner were the 100 yen burgers. LOL

yonghow

I think perhaps the 100 yen burgers, like the McPork are exceptions. A regular set meal here still cost about 600 yen on average, which would make it about S$7.50.

LOL @ McPork!!

My first thought was: Racist joke? XD

Nuts! The McDee’s link is 404! No more wallpapers…

I’ll have to admit, I like the McSpicy they have in SG and KL. I’m in the states and we’ll never have that here. 1: it’s spicy and 2: it’s dark meat.
