I’ve just finished watching the first season of HBO/BBC’s TV series His Dark Materials, based on the novels of the same name by Philip Pullman. It started off a little slow for me but the pacing soon picked up and I found myself liking it quite a lot, thanks in part to the amazing creature VFX created for the series by Framestore.

This is some of the best creature VFX work I’ve seen this year, definitely up there with the animals of Lion King and the Dragons in Game Of Thrones. What is more challenging for His Dark Materials is that many of the seemingly “mundane” shots required creature VFX work, because the humans in the story are always accompanied by their “spirit animals” called Daemons.

I highly recommend the series if you have not seen it already. Season 2 has already been greenlit, and I look forward to it very much.
