The Sword Of Hyperborea Comic Book Review

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola gives us a new tale from the world of Hellboy, co-written by Rob Williams and featuring the art of Mignolaverse veteran Laurence Campbell to deliver four fascinating glimpses through time in this stunning hardcover collection !

From the ancient warrior Gall Dennar, to Sir Edward Grey, to the B.P.R.D.’s Agent Howards, the iconic Hyperborean sword from the world of Hellboy has landed in many influential hands.

And this has been no accident. Trace the sword’s path through the adventures and encounters that finally brought it to Ragna Rok, at the end of the world, and witness the sword’s journey through history.

I love the work of the artist Laurence Campbell. His drawings (especially of humans) are highly realistic, but he has found a beautiful balance of realism that is complimented by rich and moody shadows and silhouetting that make his style highly recognizable.

(above) One of these lizard creatures from the story is actually inspired by a sketch from Mike Mignola’s Quarantine Sketchbook (2021), which I highly recommend.

The backstories of the Hellboy universe ( or Mignolaverse )is always rich and fascinating, and this is further complimented by the talented team of artists covering the material like Laurence Campbell, John Arcudi, James Harren and more.

At only 128 pages, the Sword Of Hyperborea is a pretty light read as compared to ominbus volumes for other Hellboy characters like Sir Edward Grey or Lobster Johnson, but I’m still glad Darkhorse gave it a hardcover release, which makes it much more durable for collecting ( and also looks better on the shelf with other Hellboy comics ). Recommended.
