Through A Looking Glass - The Pictures of Wayne Anderson Art Book

Through A Looking Glass is a collection of quaint fantasy illustrations by the artist Wayne Anderson, covering the first 25 years of his work. He is most well known for the illustrations and designs for the popular fantasy book and animated film The Flight Of Dragons.

Wayne Anderson was trained as a graphic designer and works primarily using a combination of crayon and pencils. As times the style of his illustrations remind me the work of the late Maurice Sendak ( Where The Wild Things Are ).

(above & below) Illustrations from what is probably the artist’s most famous work The Flight Of Dragons, which was later adapted into an animated film. Watching it as a young kid left a lasting impression on me, notably the battle with the ogre because it was one of the first films that really make me ponder upon the notion of death and loss. The quality of animation is somewhat dated by today’s standards ( it was actually done in Japan ), but I still recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it do so.

(above) Probably my favourite piece in the book. I only wish it wasn’t split across 2 pages for I’ll love to print it and have it framed as a poster.

A splendid collection of good old fashioned fantasy art realized in traditional media. My only regret is that many of the illustrations were printed across the pages, which really gets in the way of good appreciation. That said, the book remains the most comprehensive collection of Wayne Anderson illustrations that I’m aware of, and comes highly recommended.
