I’ve been a big fan of director Gareth Edwards from the time I saw his first film Monsters (2010), and since then he has gone on to make such fantastic movies like Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One (2016).
As a visual effects artist himself, one of the biggest hallmarks of Gareth’s films are the stunning visuals, and I was certainly not disappointed with the amazing world building he has done for his latest epic sci-fi film The Creator. This hardcover volume covers extensively the stunning concept art created to build this sprawling futuristic world, with a big focus on the hardware; vehicles, jet-copters, gargantuan tanks, the weaponized space station NOMAD and much more.
Book synopsis – Dive into the making of The Creator, an original science fiction adventure from director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla), with this deluxe behind-the-scenes book. Amid a war between humankind and rampant artificial intelligence in the not-too-distant future, Joshua (John David Washington) is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of the advanced AI. In his efforts to defeat the AI, Joshua discovers that the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.
Featuring commentary from Gareth Edwards and his crew, including production designer James Clyne, plus the extraordinary cast including John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Allison Janney, and Ken Watanabe, this exclusive volume tells the full story of the film’s creation. Illustrated with stunning visuals from the production of the movie, including remarkable concept art that charts the film’s evolution, this book is the ultimate companion to one of the most original and innovative films of 2023.
NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN IMAGERY: Go behind the scenes of The Creator with candid photos from the shoot and exclusive production art.
INTERVIEWS WITH CREATORS AND CAST: Dive into the creation of the film through exclusive interviews with director Gareth Edwards, his crew, and the film’s cast.
EXPERIENCE THE CREATIVE JOURNEY: Follow The Creator through its entire creative process, from script to screen, told from the point of view of the film’s director, his crew and the producers at New Regency.
I’m going to have to re-visit this film quite a few more times just to fully appreciate all the amazing work that the filmmakers have put in to realize this epic; this art book is a great companion to immerse further in the world of The Creator through the huge collection of splendid concept art. Highly recommended.

Money and space are rather tight for me, but…I am seriously considering purchasing this. I loved THE CREATOR and the visuals were amazing; it is so good to see original SF films out there.

Finally saw this.
I really, really wanted to like it. The production design, effects and look of the film are absolutely gorgeous. Even the sound design was great. They created a unique, interesting world that’s really engaging and feels lived-in and quite real. Plus it’s so wonderful to see a new property for a change.
However the story is simultaneously derivative and silly, and that third act is a total mess.
I think this book will be an excellent showcase of the film’s only strengths, so I look forward to pouring over this and enjoying it without having to suffer the actual film again. Thanks for reviewing. Will definitely pick this up.

Scott – I am sorry to say that I agree with you. It was disappointing because his past films all had great character development and an overall engaging narrative that help me stay invested in the characters, but here they just kinda fell flat.
Other than that, yeah the world building and all the design elements as you mentioned are excellent.
