The Art Of Rogue One - A Starwars Story Book Review

The Art Of Rogue One – A Starwars Story is a spectacular visual feast of concept art work created by the Lucasfilm art department for Gareth Edwards’ ( Godzilla ) entry to the Starwars Anthology series of films.

The concept team is led by Academy Award winning artist/production designer Doug Chiang, VP creative director at ILM who has worked on numerous Starwars films, as well as Neil Lamont, supervising art director for films like Edge Of Tomorrow and The Force Awakens. In order to maintain a seamless and consistent look to A New Hope, director Gareth Edwards and the art department often looked to Ralph McQuarrie’s art work for reference.

The book is pretty light on text and dedicates the full 256 page count to showcase the enormous quantity of stunning art work created by the team, with a fairly balanced spread of character, environment and ship designs. The chapters are sorted by the major locations ( Jedha, Scarif, Yavin 4, etc ) featured in the film.

(above) Designs for the U-Wing, a completely new addition to the Starwars line-up of Rebel ships. Gareth Edwards adopted an “80/20” approach to the look, where 80% was stuff that the audience had seen before, and 20% featuring something new.
