Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness : The Art Of The Movie Book Review

It’s been a while since I’ve picked up one of these ART OF books for films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and in this particular case I had more reason to also because I worked on the visual effects (VFX) for the movie.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness sees director Sam Raimi return to the Marvel franchise since his Spider-Man trilogy, and I really enjoyed the rather campy horror approach to the movie, which is quite a departure from the usual narrative style of the MCU.

The premise of the Multiverse, the Darkhold, Dr Strange, Scarlet Witch, America Chavez and the Illuminati provides tons of opportunity for exploring their respective powers and this is reflected in the expansive concept art work and character/creature/environment designs covered in this 224 pages hardcover volume.

My work on the film was concentrated mostly on the Battle of Karmar-Taj, so most of the other concept art for the other parts of the movie are new to me and I’m not just discovering them as I read the book. I particularly like the many varied character designs for all the different Doctor Strange as well as the sorceress Clea ( played by Charlize Theron ), who only appears during the mid-credits scene.

Book synopsis – Doctor Strange, with the help of allies both old and new, must traverse the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to protect a powerful young girl from a deadly, determined and deranged adversary! Continuing their popular ART OF series of movie tie-in books, Marvel Studios presents another blockbuster achievement! Featuring exclusive concept artwork and in-depth interviews with the creative team, this deluxe volume provides insider details about the making of the highly anticipated film!

(above) Character designs for the inhabitants and warriors of Karma-Taj as well as other sanctums. Most of the vfx work I worked on was for this big sequence.

(below) Character design for Rintrah. I actually worked on quite a few of his shots but many of the them with him talking were eventually cut out from the movie.

I picked up this book to keep as part of my visual effects portfolio, but I also enjoyed the movie alot and all its varied character and creature designs, and this book is an excellent way to explore all the conceptual development that went into the elaborate designs. Recommended.
