The Art of The Mitchells vs. The Machines is a 224 pages hardcover volume jam-packed with tons of frenetic and vibrantly colorful concept art pieces for one of the most highly acclaimed animated films of 2021, directed by Mike Rianda ( Gravity Falls ) and produced by Phil Lord + Christopher Miller, the innovative and creative minds behind The LEGO Movie and the Academy Award–winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Besides its compelling and hilarious story-line, The Mitchells vs. The Machines also excels visually, a luscious and beautifully realized world that evokes hand-painted brushstrokes for the CG rendered elements that are ocassionally appended by 2D, hand drawn animation as well.

The art book explores in detail the meticulous and varied character designs for the numerous members of the Mitchell family, designs for the PAL Labs’sleek, high tech inventions that eventually turn machiavellian, storyboards, colorscripts, set designs and much more.

The rich tapestry of colors and energy of the completed film can certainly be felt just by flipping through the pages of this book; a great testament to the amazing work accomplished by the concept artists and art directors who contributed to the film

(above & below) I really love these character design studies and visdev ( short for visual development ) for the film’s pivotal character Katie, many of which made it into the final look and translates really well on screen !

(above) The hilarious “Dino Stop” set, an important location in the film where plenty of action will take place.

(below left) I pre-lighted several of these shots at the Dino Stop sequence, prep work to rough out the lighting before they were passed off to the art director to paint the color keys, which in turn inform the final look of the sequence.

(above) These designs for the PAL MAX PRIME robots did not make it into the final film, but they still look wickedly cool !

Just like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, I am extremely proud to have had the opportunity to work on this film ( as a lighting & compositing artist ), and I also had great fun doing it ! This art book is imbued with all the delightful vibes as the film itself, and is an absolute treat to read and revel in all the amazing concept art that made The Mitchells such a fun film.
