2024 was a great year for Mike Mignola fans with the release of his art book Hell, Ink & Water and PINOCCHIO: An Illuminated Edition, and his winning streak continues this year with this new comic title Bowling With Corpses & Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, a collection of 8 short stories.

I found the writing of the stories more poetic ( even cryptic in places ), a stylistic departure from the more ‘mainstream’ and well defined format of his Hellboy comics; it certainly feels to me in these stories that Mignola is free of any creative obligations to his earlier franchise and goes completely untethered here, exploring new grounds to his own delight. What hasn’t changed is the splendid quality of his art work, populated with his signature skull motifs and Lovecraft inspired creatures and monstrosities. I love it.
