Art Of Battle Robot Chronicle is a splendid collection of 80s mecha and giant robots illustrations by veteran mecha designer and director Koichi Ohata (大畑晃一), whose long list of credits include titles like Cybernetics Guardian, M.D. Geist, Genocyber, Gunbuster and many more.
Admittedly, while I have come across many of his mecha designs before in bootleg anime magazines from Hong Kong like A-Club, I’ve not actually seen most of these anime as they were just not easily available to a kid growing up in Singapore during the 80s. Nonetheless, their captivating designs are still fascinating to me, and this book is a most excellent showcase with a nice mix of both colored illustrations as well as settei drawings spread across some 200 pages.

This book will likely have a bigger appeal to folks who grew up during the 80s and enjoy a healthy dose of the more ‘vintage’ robot and mecha designs popular during those years. That said, their distinctive visual aesthetics is certainly a unique product of that era and make for great reference and study material for any mecha designers and artists looking to emulate that specific look and feel. Recommended.
