Robert Frederick Blum ( 1857 – 1903 ) was an American artist. In the May of 1890 the artist journeyed to Japan and stayed there for a year, painting some extraordinary scenes of the Meiji Era, some of which are reproduced in this book.
(Below) The Meguro Fudo shrine in Tokyo, where it still stands today.
(above & below) Some of Robert’s pastel works. The artist served as the President of the Painters in Pastel, a member of the Society of American Artists.
The last section of the book focuses on art work that Robert worked on after his 2 trips to Japan, from the period of 1893-1903.
(above & below) Looking at these works I see the influences of great masters like Alma Tadema, JW Waterhouse and Sargent.
I’ve been fascinated by the artist’s works since I saw a painting of his online and have been searching for his art book for quite a long time. I was of course thrilled to see this one during my recent time in Tokyo, and I give it my highest recommendations.
Technical note : The spine/binding is quite delicate, so be gentle when handling the book.
