There has been so much exciting news about the Ghost In The Shell anime/manga franchise for the past week or so, but certainly high on the list is the release of the teaser trailer for the upcoming anime series by animation studio Science Saru ( PingPong, Eizouken, Devilman Crybaby, Space Dandy, Dandadan ). Check it out below –
While the first poster for the series that was released a while back had already garnered immense excitement because of the faithfulness of the character design to Shirow Masamune’s original Ghost In The Shell manga, this teaser is the first peek at the actual visuals from the series and it looks absolutely amazing, especially the previously mentioned note about the look of the character designs and indeed the overall feel of the universe.
A new poster (image below) was also released together with the announcement of the teaser –

Besides this exciting teaser, much of the other news on Ghost In The Shell comes from the big scale exhibition now on-going in Tokyo celebrating the 30th anniversary of the franchise. I might write another post about it later on if time permits, but you can take a look at the official Ghost In The Shell twitter account to see the extensive coverage.

With each teaser release my excitement for the show increases. I cannot wait for July to hit. I loved the first poster image for the faithfulness of the Major’s design — as you note above — and this second poster just screams late 1990s early 2000s Masamune Shirow artwork of the Major.
And that’s not to mention the latest trailer.
I don’t want to jinx anything, but I’m starting to feel like this might be a true generational anime like GITS and GITS SAC were back in the early 2000s.

Not the anime fan I once was in the 90s and early 2000s. The older, established properties keep me coming back every now and then though. I did think Ping Pong was greatness, one of the best I’ve seen since the “old days”. Crybaby was entertaining shlock (‘shlock’ in terms of the edgy/lurid content, not quality). Space Dandy was the first Shinichiro Watanabe show I didn’t care for. And I still like to go back and watch stuff from the 80s-200s I missed.
All that is to say: this new GiTS will likely have me return once again (as SAC and 2nd Gig did back then). Now if they can just let Kawajiri make a new Ninja Scroll or Vampire Hunter D…

Chris – Same here, very excited for the release indeed. I’ve always enjoyed most of Science Saru’s work and I have high hopes for this one too. The visuals so far look very promising !
Chris James – I was personally not a fan of Space Dandy either, feels like our tastes are quite similar in that respect. :]
