The Illustrated World Of Tolkien Book Review

With The Rings Of Power now streaming on Amazon Prime, I thought it was a fitting time to post the review of this particular book that I’ve purchased almost two years ago but just never got around to reviewing – The Illustrated World Of Tolkien. Running at almost 300 pages, this hardcover book showcases resplendent illustrations that paint a fantasy world of boundless imagination dreamed up by the late J. R. R. Tolkien, author of the Hobbit, Lord Of The Rings and Silmarillion. Some of the artists who contributed to the illustrations featured in this book include Kip Rasmussen, Michael Foreman, Andrew Mockett, Victor Ambrus, Ian Miller and more.

This book is an excellent guide to Middle-earth and the Undying Lands, with vivid descriptions of all Tolkien’s beasts, monsters, races, nations, deities, and the flora and fauna of the territory that are contained herein. Full-color pages with stunning illustrations create an enchanting source for information on all the fantastical places and creatures that sprung from Tolkien’s mind. Special features include a detailed map, a chronology of all ages, a general index, and a special index that will refer you to Tolkien’s original works for each entry.

From time to time for enjoyment I would read up Tolkien’s bibliography, and previously I only had Alan Lee and John Howe’s art work to help me with my visualization and imagination, but this book has introduced me too many other artists and art work that help me paint a more vivid picture of the author’s worlds, and I love it. At the time of writing this review, this hardcover book is only $14 on Amazon US; nothing short of a steal for so much excellent content. Highly recommended.

It looks like an updated version of The Tolkien Encyclopedia published by David Day about twenty years ago. I recognize most of the Ian Miller & Day paintings. Still, it’s great to depict Middle Earth differently from the John Howe “Canon”. Ian Miller was the main illustrator of the old school Games Workshop tabletop/figurine games and his talent is sorely missed.

Thomas – Wow, I had no idea the history of this art book goes way back. Thank you for the information especially for Ian Miller !
