Disney+ has just fully released the 2nd season of ‘Light & Magic’ ( 3 episodes ), a documentary series showcasing the absolutely fascinating work of the visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic ( ILM ), founded by George Lucas. Check out the trailer below –
While season 1 talks more about the origin story of ILM and it’s groundbreaking work on the visual effects for Star Wars, this 2nd season dives into more recent work and the company’s embrace of CGI, including the astounding Davy Jones for the Pirates Of The Carribean films.
Having worked at ILM Singapore from 2009-2015, the films and artist interviews covered also resonate more with me, like CG supervisors Mohen Leo and Polly Ing, both of whom I had the pleasure of working for. I’m also thrilled of course that the documentary touched on Gore Verbinski’s Rango, which was the first film I worked on after joining ILM.
Also, in celebration of ILM’s 50th anniversary, there will also be an upcoming art book that will be released in December ( image above ). I’ll surely be picking it up for review, so look out for it later this year.
