Tokyo is a monstrous, sprawling metropolis any day, but you really do need to see it from higher elevation to fully appreciate just how insanely dense the city is. While visiting the Ghibli Expo held on the observation deck of Roppongi Hill’s Mori Tower, I had a good chance for some shots of the city from the 52th floor ( granted, these small pictures don’t do the city justice at all ).
As you can see there’s very little vegetation that can provide shade ( as compared to say, Singapore ), which is why temperatures soar easily to 35 degrees and above in summer.
Some other great places ( with public access, some with a fee ) to get a bird’s eye view of the city include Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, The Tokyo Metropolitan building and the Ebisu Garden Place Tower.

dense indeed. the buildings look so compact, almost shoehorned into the cityscape. wonder how a western postal worker thinks of working in Tokyo.

martin – Interestingly enough, I’ve never lost a single mail or package in my 6 years in Tokyo, a testament to the efficiency and reliability of Japanese post. :]
