Realm Of The Foxes, Fushimi-Inari Shrine, Kyoto

Posted By yonghow on May 25th, 2013

This is a continuation from an earlier post here.

As we journey deeper and higher into the mountains stone foxes, messengers of the Shinto deity Inari start to emerge in numbers, often standing watch over altars.

A collection of altars near the base of the mountain, decorated by countless mini Toriis. The atmosphere is rich with mysticism, and you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

(above) About halfway to the summit one is rewarded with a spectacular view of Kyoto city. A couple of quaint old shops serving delicious Japanese desserts are located here as well.
