Edwin Austin Abbey (1852 – 1911) was an American illustrator and painter. He was renowned for his paintings and drawings of Shakespearean and Victorian subjects, as well as Arthurian lore, which I’m a really big fan of. This is why I was quite surprised that I’ve never come cross his work or his name until recently; clearly my knowledge of American artists is severely lacking.
Here are some of his paintings I found online that I really fancy – I see likeness in his style of painting to some of my other favourite artists like J.W Waterhouse, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Gustav Klimt, John Everett Millais; pretty much most of the Pre-Raphaelite masters.
There’s an art book for him listed on Amazon; but it seems to be a very old publication and is out of print. I would love for the big art book publishers like Taschen or Phaidon to release an updated monograph for him; he certainly deserves it.
