John Everett Millais (1829-1896) was an English painter and one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of artists whose shared vision was to reform art that has been “corrupted” by the influence of Raphael’s Classical style. Some other prominent artists associated with the order include Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Lord Leighton and one of my favourite painters of all times, John William Waterhouse.

This book, published by Phaidon and running at 256 pages contains about 200 reproductions of the artist’s paintings. I’ve always been assured by the high quality of Phaidon’s art publications, having purchased excellent books like Lawrence Alma Tadema, Waterhouse and Victorian Art.

(above) Ophelia, one of Millais’s most famous paintings and a signature piece for the Pre-Raphaelites. I’ve had the good fortune of seeing the original when I visited Tate Britain a few years back. There is also a statue of John Everett Millais outside the Museum.

(above left ) John Everett Millais pays homage to the Spanish master Diego Velázquez (work shown on right), whose masterpiece Las Meninas was an important subject of study during my art student years, together with JLD’s Oath Of The Horatii and Théodore Géricault’s Raft Of The Medusa.

A sumptuous hard cover volume; I only wish more of the reproductions could have been bigger to take advantage of the size of the book, but given the huge scope and quality of pieces presented this can be overlooked. Highly recommended.
