Come rain or shine, typhoon or tsunami, Nakano Broadway is the manga mecha that I always pay a visit to whenever I’m in Tokyo. This time round is no different, and I was lucky enough to catch a pop-up store showcasing the work of manga artist Tsukasa Hojo (北条 司) and his most famous work, City Hunter ( シティーハンター ).
The store was filled with plenty of merch from the series; posters, postcards, T-shirts, gashapon machines, but the biggest draw for me were the many original manga panels that were on display. Check them out below –
Visiting the store made me want to read the manga badly, so I picked up a copy at Kinokuniya the following day (below). I’ve always wanted to collect the entire series, but I have a thousand other manga and books I want to get, so it’ll have to wait…
If you’re ever visiting Nakano Broadway, there’s a good chance there’ll be some special manga exhibition or pop-up store going on, so be sure to circle the floors so that you don’t miss anything good !

Yeah, those are definitely awesome framed panels from the manga. Very cool. A few of those would look great in my home 🙂

I envy your trips to these little shops: small exhibitions of paintings, autographed postcards, and the author’s manga for consolation!

I’ve returned a couple of weeks ago from a month-long trip to Tokyo, and it’s WILD to revisit some of the posts from your blog. Now that I’ve been there, to recognize these places and to know the larger context– I dunno, it makes me happy.
Nakano Broadway is so much more than I thought it would be. I could spend months exploring it. I still remember how to get there by train! And to eat at the McDonalds in the gallery! And to see the puppies in the pet stores near the entrance of Nakano Broadway!
During the summer, gallery of Hakaba had a pop-up for Junji Ito and GeGeGe no Kitaro’s merch. Nothing super worth grabbing, but I enjoyed being there haha
Since I’m writing this, I should mention that thanks to your rec, I’ve visited the Edo-Tokyo open air architecture museum, and it was one of the best days I’ve ever had. Really, a borderline life-changing experience. Thank you so so much.

novak – I’m so glad you enjoyed your trip to Tokyo, and yes, I do get sucked into that pet shop too because of all the cute little puppies hahaha. I’m a big fan of Nakano Broadway too of course, I always visit it at least once when I’m in Tokyo.
The Edo-Tokyo museum is excellent right ? Glad you enjoyed that too ! I had such a good time there as well.
