This is the official catalogue for the Mucha Slav Epic Exhibition that was held in Tokyo over the early summer of 2017. You can take a look at some of the pictures I took during my visit.
This exhibition was a big deal because Alphonse Mucha’s Slav Epic murals have never left Prague until this exhibition, and by the end of the run over 600 thousand people had visited it, a staggering number. This catalogue features all the murals and art pieces that were on display at the exhibition.
From the pictures I took at the exhibition you can see just how massive the murals actually are, and the print size of even a huge book will find it hard to do justice to the spectacular quality of Mucha’s art work, but this catalogue is a handy volume to see all of his Slav Epics pieces in a single book. There are no shortage of Mucha art books out there, but few I know are dedicated to just the Slav Epic.
(above & below) These annotated studies of the paintings provide great background information on each of the Slav Epic murals, in both English and Japanese.
(above) I really like this particular set of posters, a beautiful culmination of art, design and typography. I believe it’s the first time they been shown in Japan too; I don’t remember seeing them in the last 2 Mucha exhibitions held in Tokyo.
This catalogue is a great volume collecting Mucha’s magnum opus. My highest recomendations.

Damn,he reminds me of another Japanese illustrator I’ve saw on web years back then – he had similar tone of colors. They’re really transparent, not opaque despite describing many details that are happening inside a single scene. When will I ever reach that level? Lmao….

Wow. Reminds me a lot of Klimt in ways. I have an art book about Mucha but like most books seem to they focus on the more line oriented or decorative classic Art Nouveau works – this is really incredible and I will look into this book or one about the Slav Epic. Thanks

Star – Mucha must have influenced so many modern day artists and illustrators. Getting to his level of technical competency is a matter of practice…I think. 😛
