The Tokyo Genso art book imagines a post-apocalyptic Japan through a series of fascinating illustrations depicting a barren and desolate Tokyo landscape gradually reclaimed by nature. The images will certainly resonate strongly with any Tokyoite ( or anyone who has spent a considerable amount of time in Tokyo ) because the sights portrayed are landmarks that have come to define the sprawling metropolis.
(above) The canal behind a row of good eateries near JR Shibuya line. Here’s how it looks like in real life.
(above) The famous 109 ( the 9 is hidden by vegetation in the illustration ) building near the Shibuya crossing.
(above) The view from the platform of JR Takadanobaba, where my film school used to be. It is also the birthplace of manga genius Osamu Tezuka.
(above) No representation of Tokyo can be complete with Shinjuku. Here it shows giant screen and shopping malls around the East exit of JR Shinjuku.
An imaginative and beautifully rendered collection of a wasted Tokyo cityscape, perhaps a few thousand years in the future. Recommended, especially for folks who are familiar with Tokyo’s urban landscape.
