First published in 2015, the Tokyo Genso (東京幻想) art book imagines a post-apocalyptic Japan through a series of fascinating illustrations depicting a barren and desolate Tokyo landscape gradually reclaimed by nature. The images are sure to resonate strongly with any Tokyoite ( or indeed anyone who has spent a considerable amount of time in Tokyo ) because the sights portrayed are landmarks that have come to define the sprawling metropolis.

This 2nd volume showcases additional prominent Tokyo landmarks that were not featured in the first book, in particular the impressive Tokyo Skytree ( as seen on the cover art above ) as well as several really pretty landscapes adorned with blooming Sakura foliage. Also new in vol 2 are the egregious embellishment of zoo variety animals peppered throughout the scenery, of which I’m personally not a fan. Perhaps the artist’s intention is to add more visual interest to the landscapes, but they take away the plausible realism rather than add any value to them ( for me, anyway ).

(image above) This particular piece seems to be kind of an genre outlier/anachronism because the floating structures suggest a fantasy setting rather than dystopian sci-fi. Also, I’m not entirely sure which existing building or structure it is based on, if any.

Despite my aforementioned quip about the presence of animals in the landscapes that ruined the illusion of realism, the art work are still fascinating to look at, especially if you are familiar with the structures and locations of Tokyo. There are some overlapping content with the first volume, but not numerous to the extent that it would feel like a double-dip should you pick up this one. Definitely worth a look for the beautiful art work !
