Jyugoyamonogatari ( A Tale of Fifteen Nights ) is a poem/picture book collaboration between Japanese illustrator Katsuya Terada ( Monkey King, Zenbu, Covergirls ) and writer/novelist Yumemakura Baku.

The story tells of two individuals, Genjikibo and the Dream Monk and their journey of fifteen nights as they search for treasures found “between Heaven and Earth”. In their travels they encounter mythological and fantasy creatures, faeries and…voluptuous naked females, as you would expect from Terada’s art work.

Any new work by Terada-san is always welcomed, although the level of complexity and detail of the illustrations don’t feel quite as polished as say, his Monkey King or Monkey King 2. Perhaps he is working in a particular style tailored specifically for the literary content of the book. All that said, it is still fantastic art work.

I’m not a fan of how they typography is presented in the book, however. The layout of the text and images seem sloppy at times, and often Terada’s images are obscured by a clutter of poorly placed text strewn all over.

Not the best Terada graphic novel/art book available out there, but fans of his art work will still want to check it out. The relatively low price should make for an easy purchase.
