After a very long wait my copy of Park Chan Wook’s Vengeance trilogy finally arrives in the mail. I’ve not seen these for quite a while ( granted, they are not movies you want to watch everyday ) so I’m eager to revisit them on Blu-ray.
There’s enough gore and violence spread between these 3 films to keep me up for many sleepless nights so I better pace myself. A US remake of Old Boy is in the works, helmed by Spike Lee and starring Josh Brolin – I’m interested to see how the film will turn out through the vision and treatment of an American director.
The tin case boxset also comes with a 30 page booklet with some additional background on the films, as well as an interview with the director.

this is exciting. Oldboy is certainly a favorite of mine. i really have no interest in seeing American remakes, as pretentious as that may sound; i don’t understand why someone couldn’t just appreciate a film even though it isn’t in English. speaking of remakes, don’t even get me started on the remake of Straw Dogs!

Oldboy was electric the first time I saw it. The violence is part of the effect, but there is much beyond that. I COULD watch it everyday, and I did that at first.
I Saw the Devil had some of the same effect on me, but there were some inconsistencies in tone that keep it from rising to Oldboy’s height.
And how good is the cinematography in these Korean films!

Zack – I had no idea there was a remake of Straw Dogs ! I guess the thing about these Hollywood remakes is that those who’ve watched it might be inclined to seek out the original too – had there been no remake they might never have known about the movie at all.
King Raoh – Absolutely agree with you on the excellent cinematography of Korean Cinema. I think in recent years they have come to surpass that of most Asian films, Japanese included with respect to technical brilliance and creativity.

The only part that I do not like about Oldboy is the twist between the girl and Dae-su. I totally hate **c***
