The BBC Natural History Unit continue its brilliant streak of exemplary documentaries (Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Life) with Africa, a 6 part series focusing on wildlife and wild habitats in Africa. The series was 4 years in the making and is presented by Sir David Attenborough, who also traveled with the team to Africa to film a few of the episodes.

The spectacular visuals in prior productions like Planet Earth and Blue Planet have set a very high bar indeed, but the production team on Africa have again risen up to the challenge and delivered equally, if not more hauntingly beautiful visuals. I was particularly mesmerized by the satellite footages of the African continent taken from space, the swirls of golden yellow, verdant green and blue coming together to form a landscape of indescribable beauty.

But it isn’t just pretty pictures. The last episode “The Future” takes a sobering look at the challenges faced by the continent due to global warming and the ongoing fight to protect the wildlife in Africa. As always Sir David’s gentle and nurturing demeanor is incredibly persuasive but the pessimist in me feel that our species will not act in time to overcome this insurmountable calamity that we have ourselves created.
