Update : There is now a Yoko Tanji art book ! Read my review here.
The March 2018 issue of Japanese magazine Illustration is a special feature on the work of Yoko Tanji. I’ve been a big fan since my introduction to her work in the Kikan S magazines when I was studying/working in Tokyo.
Yoko Tanji is a prolific artist, illustrating art work for magazines, cover art for books and short novels ( totaling more than 350 ), and also has a big presence on Twitter, posting new drawings and sketches very often. I highly recommend following her at @yokotanji.
( above ) The self explanatory “I hate Mondays” illustrations are posted every Monday morning on the artist’s twitter feed. She must have enough of these to fill up an art book. ( below ) A virtual tour of the artist’s atelier/workspace.
(above) There is also a short 2 page interview with concept artist Kouji Tajima about his work on Gantz O.
Yoko Tanji clearly has more than enough art work to fill up a dedicated art book, and I’ve actually contact Japanese art books publisher PIE to suggest publishing one for her, hopefully that happens in the near future. In the meantime, this issue of Illustration magazine is an excellent introduction if you are new to her work.
Illustration magazine is a fantastic way to catch up with the best artists working in Japan right now. Check out some earlier issues here, here and here.
