Ultramega Vol 2 - James Harren Comic Review

(read my review for Vol 1 here.)

Inspired by the tokusatsu heroes and kaijus of the Japanese Ultraman franchise, and further infused with a hearty dose of Lovecraftian horror, BPRD and Rumble comic artist James Harren bring us Ultramega Vol 2 !

When Kaiju invaded Earth, only three humans given the power of Ultramega could save humanity…but they failed. Now the Earth has become a wasteland ruled by the Kaiju Queen, a world without hope till a new Ultramega rises. But could the power of Ultramega be what dooms the world?

Regular fans of my blog will know that I am a big fan of James Harren since discovering his work in the Hellboy spin-off series BPRD. I especially enjoy the way the artist draw and depict action, with dramatic poses and speed-lines that really accentuate the frenetic, often chaotic energy and movement of his characters. James Harren also has a special knack for illustrating…beautiful, or if you prefer, macabre looking innards and tentacle-ish things.

This ominibus Vol 2 collects Ultramega TP issues 5-8.

This is a worthy and much welcomed follow-up to the first volume, packed full of James Harren’s delicious art; with dizzying action and fights complemented by a plethora of delightfully ( read : grotesquely ) designed creatures. Just like my nitpick for Vol 1, I only wish it could have been released in hardcover format. Perhaps a future ‘library edition’ that consolidates both volumes will do that, and I guess I’ll just have to double-dip. Recommended.
