Lobster Johnson Omnibus Vol 1 Comic Book Review

Fans of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comics and its expanded universe ( aka as Mignolaverse ) will be familiar with the character Lobster Johnson, a masked vigilante that battled Nazis & mobsters during the 1930s. Lobster Johnson first appeared in the short story The Killer In My Skull, and his supernatural form also aided Hellboy in battling the Conqueror Worm in 2001.

Lobster Johnson is one of the many interesting characters from the Hellboy universe, including members of the BPRD like Liz Sherman, Johann Krauss, Ben Daimio as well as the villains The Black Flame & Crimson Lotus, both of which make appearances in the stories collected in this book.

The bulk of the stories are drawn by artist Tonci Zonjic, together with a few other guest artists and Mike Mignola also contributes to many of the covers. Just like BPRD and Witchfinder omnibus books, a generous section of concept art and sketches are also included, and they always make me appreciate the work of the comic artists even more seeing the amount of prep and research needed to complete a story.

Book synopsis – After years of captivating fans’ imaginations from the pages of Hellboy and B.P.R.D., the pulp-style adventures of Lobster Johnson took the limelight in his own series of comics adventures. From gangsters to Nazis to an army of monkeys, the Lobster faces classic foes in strange new ways. His adventures are now collected for the first time in a hardcover edition, collecting trade volumes The Burning Hand, Satan Smells a Rat, and Get the Lobster and the short story “Lobster Johnson: The Empty Chair” featuring writing by Mike Mignola, John Arcudi and Tonci Zonjic with art by Zonjic, Joe Querido, Sebastián Fiumara, and more!

(above) one of Hellboy/BPRD’s most powerful villains The Black Flame, who certainly cuts an imposing figure. The Black Flame has taken on a few human hosts and also appears in a huge fight with Liz Sherman in Hell On Earth volume 3.

I always welcome and look forward to these Mignolaverse omnibus editions because they handily collect all the stories in one single book and makes for great binge reading, and also because the hardcover format it comes in is sturdy and last much longer than the rather filmsy trade paperbacks. Recommended.
