The Metabarons - First Cycle Comic Review

The Metabarons or The Saga of the Meta-Barons is a science fiction comics series relating the history of a dynasty of perfect warriors known as the Metabarons. The Metabarons series was written by creator Alejandro Jodorowsky and illustrated by Argentine artist Juan Giménez.

Metabarons is actually a spin-off story from The Incal ( L’incal ), also written by Alejandro Jodorowsky and drawn by the legendary comic artist Moebius, whom I am a HUGE fan ( who isn’t ? ).

The connection alone was enough to pique my interest, but at the same time it is impossible to not overstate just how incredibly amazing the art work by Juan Giménez is, especially considering the enormous amount of pages he had to illustrate; this volume alone is 540 pages, all in detailed, glorious full color.

Inspired heavily by Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi novel Dune, the tone of The Metabarons is much heavier and somber compared to the more light-hearted, almost whimsical Incal, and this is reflected in the art style as well.

Publisher book synopsis – A must-read spin-off of best selling Sci-Fi masterpiece The Incal. Visionary film director and author Alejandro Jodorowsky’s returns with a grand-scale space opera about family, sacrifice, and survival told within a universe immense in both scope and originality. Available in softcover for the first time!

The Metabarons chronicles the fascinating dynasty of the ultimate warrior. This collection introduces the history of the Metabarons and reveals the origins of their deep-seated principles, their vast wealth, their cybernetic implants, and their most brutal custom: that the only way for a son to become the next Metabaron is to slay his own father in mortal combat. Follow generations of Metabarons as they struggle to overcome the forces amassed against them in a galaxy corrupted by greed, power, and terror.

The exceptional art work of the late Juan Giménez alone is enough to convince me to pick up this book, and any sci-fi fan who enjoys sweeping and epic space operas will find plenty to like here as well. My only regret was not picking up the hardcover edition ( which comes with a more attractive cover art imho ) because my budget was limited; I might have to double-dip at some point in the future. Highly recommended.

Gimenez created some true works of art with his comics. his short stories are also fabulous.
His imagination in science fiction is unsurpassed.
His main work is “The Metabarons”, but if you like it, then his second work is the quadrilogy of “The Fourth power”. Following, the “Segments” trilogy…to finish the fantasy trilogy “Me, Dragon”.

This is why I love this blog. Really interesting choice to highlight, one that I wasn’t aware of at all. The art looks incredible and the SF story seems right up my alley. I’ve just bought it now, and looking forward to reading it when it arrives at my doorstep.

Cristiano – His art work is exceptional indeed. I’m only starting to explore his work beyond Metabarons so thank you for those recommendations !

Chris – You’re too kind ! I hope you’ll enjoy the comic as much as I do ! :]

Didn‘t know there was such a nice edition. Ordered it because of your blog post and got my copy today. I went for the hard cover version and holding that massive tome in your hands just feels great by itself. Can‘t wait to dive in! <3

Gimenez produced a huge amount of material.
Graphically of high quality, but not always in terms of the level of the stories. He wasn’t very good at writing stories himself if they were very long. Many of his short or very short stories (a couple of pages, two or three pages) were fabulous. In any case, a feast for the eyes. The long stories I listed in the first message are definitely the best he did.
In English, as for I know there is an out of print collection of short stories called “A matter of Time”.
There is of course his art book, “Overload”:
