I quite enjoyed Solo – A Star Wars Story; I looked past the comparisons of Alden Ehrenreich / Harrison Ford’s portrayal of the titular character and instead immersed myself in the absolutely stunning visual universe that the concept art team and ILM artists created.
All these are marvelously distilled and collected in this art book, written by Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak. The book has everything you would look for – production paintings, concept art and sketches, storyboards, matte paintings and more. The images I’ve included below are but a small sampling of what is actually featured in the book.
(above & below) The unmistakable art work of concept artist Iain McCaig, who also worked on a few other Star Wars films like Episode I, II, III and VII. Definitely check out his art book Shadowline.
(above top left) The beautiful mechanical designs of artist Ian McQue.
Solo might not have done fantastically well at the box office or gotten the traction that Lucasfilm wished it had, but there’s just no denying it’s a visually stunning film, thanks to the incredible art team who created such spectacular concept art. This book will likely make it onto my favourite art books list of 2018, and gets my highest recommendations.

Wow…yep, another stunning SW art book that I may just get my mitts on (but I will need another bookcase!). And I also liked SOLO a lot–I pretty much ignored the bile that was thrown at the film.
