The Art And Making Of The Dark Knight Trilogy is a big 300 paged hard cover book detailing the making of Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy of films. Its really more a “making of” rather than an “art of” book, although there are dozens of conceptual sketches and art work scattered throughout the book.
(above left) The photo of a 3 year old John F.Kennedy saluting his father’s casket informed the writers’ characterization of Bruce Wayne. I love reading about references like these as they really give great insight into the filmmakers motivations for their characters, and makes the movie watching experience much more immersive and rewarding.
(above and below) The late Heath Ledger as the terrifying Joker. The intensive bank heist sequence at the start of the film was Christopher Nolan’s tribute to one of the best heist films ever made, Michael Mann’s Heat. ( if you’ve not seen it drop whatever you’re doing now and find yourself a copy of the film. )
(above and below) Costume designs for Bruce Wayne and the Bat suit, by Lindy Hemming. Her costume design work is also featured in Film Craft’s Costume Design book, which I will review in the upcoming weeks.
(above top) A highly successful and haunting aerial view of Gotham City in Batman Begins, realized digitally by Double Negative using more than 1500 photographs of dawn over Chicago. I love these “invisible” visual effects shots, and invariably the best ones are usually those rooted/based on reality.
(below) A collection of marketing material for the three films near the end of the book.
There’s way too much content in here to cover with just a dozen pictures. If you spend a good afternoon reading through the whole book and then revisit the films I’m really sure you’ll be much more appreciative of the filmmakers efforts and hard work. Very highly recommended.

excellent book, and i am a big fan of these films. i really can’t stress enough how fun and amazing and exhilarating it was to see my long time hero, who i have idolized since basically before kindergarten age, run through my city and show up in neighborhoods that i am in almost every day and know intimately. Pittsburgh was always my own private Gotham City growing up, and now i get to share part of that with the whole world. awesome.

Zack – Must be unreal seeing places so familiar to you appear in the film. :] I’m looking forward to watching KNR again when the blu-ray is released.
