Who doesn’t love the Super Mario Bros, undisputedly one of the greatest and most influential video games ever created ? I think it might be the first ever video game I’ve played on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and I remember myself just green with envy when one of my cousins showed off his set during a family dinner.
This particular issue of the Japanese visual arts/lifestyle magazine Casa BRUTUS is a special feature issue on Super Mario Bros., celebrating the renowned video games’ 40th anniversary. Packed with plenty of delightful content that includes pictures of the Nintendo museum, fascinating concept art and designs created during the early development of the game, fact sheets, charts and diagrams and more.
What is even better is that although this is a Japanese magazine, the written text are entirely in English, so you can actually understand what you’re reading instead of just been able to admire the pretty images.

I chanced upon this magazine while browsing at Shinjuku’s Kinokuniya bookstore during my Tokyo spring trip this year, took a quick browse and quickly determined that it was definitely worth picking up, as any Super Mario Bros. fan would surely agree. A beautiful volume to celebrate and marvel in game’s splendid legacy and history.
