[re futurhythm] is an art book by character designer/illustrator Range (Renji) Murata, well known for his work on anime like Blue Submarine and Last Exile. This volume was published in 2004 and is out of print – I got my copy at Nakano’s Mandarake bookstore during my recent time in Tokyo.
Murata is a highly accomplished character designer/illustrator, although his choice of subject matter often feature Lolicon themes, which I steer clear of. Thankfully this volume feature very little of those, and his “regular” art work is just superb.
(above) Some selected pieces from the anime series Blue Submarine. There is a dedicated art book; read the review here. Am I the only one who thinks Murata’s illustration of Tetsu here looks lot like the actor Adrien Brody ?
A fantastic volume showcasing plenty of Murata’s colored works up until 2004. The book is out of print but used copies can still be found on Amazon. I also highly recommend his other art book Prismtone.

They way they mixed 2d and 3d in Blue Submarine was brilliant. Very solid with a nice touch of dynamics in his characters anatomy. Yes he does look like Adrien Brody

Distrakt – Agreed ! Blue Sub was definitely a groundbreaking anime in that respect during its time.
