Art Of The Boxtrolls Book

The Art Of The Boxtrolls takes a fascinating look behind the art and making of Laika’s ( Coraline, ParaNorman ) latest stop-motion animation film, The Boxtrolls.

The 160 paged hard cover book is packed full of gorgeous concept art, from character design sheets, detailed storyboards, color keys to background/set production photographs and breakdowns of prop designs.

(above) Set art pieces by Paul Lasaine. The look of the Boxtroll’s landscape is in part influenced by German Expressionist art.

The concept artists working on Boxtrolls were encouraged to distort and twist the architecture of the buildings, which when coupled with the play of light and shadows gives an interesting “destabilizing quality to the film”.

(above) Notice the considerable size of the set pieces – building them bigger helps to sell the scale and prevent the give-away, miniaturized look of older stop-motion films.

My respect and awe for the amazingly talented artists at Laika grows with each reading of their film’s making of books. This comes highly recommended, and go watch the film, if you haven’t !
