Passion Femmes – Milo Manara Art Book Review

Maurilio Manara (born 1945), known professionally as Milo Manara is an Italian comic book writer and artist, well known for producing comics that revolve around elegant, beautiful women caught up in unlikely and fantastical erotic scenarios. I was first introduced to his art a good many years ago by Good Weather and had also picked up some of his comics during my trip to Italy, but this is actually the first time I’m reviewing one of his publications.

Published in late 2020, this large format hardcover book running at 320 pages showcases a sumptuous collection of Manara’s beautiful illustrations, featuring commercial pieces for product endorsements ( Italian manufacturing company TEXA ) as well as the artist’s personal works.

Personally I think “elegant” is a good word to describe Manara’s artistic portrayal of women; there are of course some pieces depicting full frontal nudity, but the work is never crass, obscene or overtly explicit, and the overall composition serve to accentuate the beauty and femininity of the female form.

This book is another prized discovery from my recent trip to Tokyo, in particular my visit to the excellent French bookstore Maison Petit Renard, where I was able to browse a good number of art books and comics that I would really love to pick up.

On a related note, Manara also drew an illustration of Italian actress Monica Belluci and the art work is included in her pictorial.

Passion Femmes - Milo Manara Art Book Review

A most splendid volume celebrating the beauty of the female form and the art of Milo Manara. The book is published by GLENAT and is in French, but any language barrier will do little in preventing you from enjoying the art work. I hope to review more of Manara’s comics in the near future as well. Highly recommended.
