This year’s holiday season is a great time to be a Ghibli animation fan, especially if you are a big art book lover like me because there are some excellent titles lined up. First up we have the Nausicaa and Castle In The Sky Imageboard art books; ‘Imageboards’ (イメージボード) is a Japanese animation industry lingo for visdev/concept art work, and both these books showcase the beautiful watercolor concept art illustrations painted by Hayao Miyazaki.
One of the big selling points of these new titles compared to the already existing Ghibli ‘Art Of’ books is the big print size ( 6.4 X 25.7 cm ) that really showcase Miyazaki’s illustrations to great effect.
Both these titles were released on December 9th 2024; I have already received both copies of the books and will post detailed reviews for them soon, so stay tuned. Also in the same series is an upcoming art book for My Neighbor Totoro which will be released next year.
Next up we have the positively massive (568 pages) hardcover tome ‘Painting The Worlds Of Studio Ghibli’ (スタジオジブリの美術) that will showcase the stunning background art paintings for all 27 Ghibli animated films, from Nausicaa right up to The Boy And The Heron.
‘Painting The Worlds Of Studio Ghibli’ (スタジオジブリの美術) will be released on January 22nd 2025, and I will of course be picking up a copy for review.

All of those are so cool. I may want to pick up the background one for sure!
(also Miyazaki’s image boards are the best part of the art of books. Is Totoro is next, does that mean they’re gonna release the books in film-release order?)
I recently got the English edition of the Ghibli Architecture book which is so wonderful. It definitely gives you an appreciation of the depth of Ghibli’s design work.

Thanks for sharing these, as always. These are must-buys for me. Thanks for also listing CDJapan links, as well. I find myself buying through them a lot more, the last couple of years.
