Beautiful Female Portraits By Contemporary Painters is an introduction to the work of numerous Japanese artists working in the field today specializing in extremely life-like, photo-realistic paintings. Traditional media, primarily oil paint is used.

Many of these paintings are so skilfully executed that at first glance they can be easily passed off as photographs – only upon closer scrutiny can the brushstrokes be seen.

While the artists’ stunning ability to re-create photo-reality through keen observation is a testament to their technical skills, it is also the added element of “painterlyness” and sheer artistry of these paintings that make them highly appealing and aesthetically pleasing.

There is also a small section near the end of the book that touches on Nihonga ( traditional Japanese painting ), like the beautiful work of Ikenaga Yasunari (above). Read his the review for his art book One Hundred Nights Of Bliss.

Some of the painters featured in this book have published art books of their own, like Osamu Obi and Shimamura Nobuyuki. I hope to do book reviews for them in the near future.

This is a great introduction to the spectacular art work of Japanese photo-real painters. Highly recommended.
