Megasia – Story Of Another Universe is an art book by Japanese illustrator Monokubo (もの久保). Through her boundless imagination she dreams up fantastic worlds where the mundane meets the magical, with giant animals inhabiting our realm. The massive size of these otherwise familiar creatures create an anachronistic sight that is both bizarre and charming.
(above & below) A recurring visual element of Monokubo’s illustrations seem to be influenced by Shintoism; with the giant white fox (kitsune) and Japanese red torii gates, not unlike this wonderfully mystical Shinto shrine I visited in Kyoto.
Monokubo paints a rich and fantastic world inhabited by giant beasts, a theme not unlike that of my favorite anime Princess Mononoke. Her art work is luscious and brilliant, and I hope to explore more of her art books very soon. I only wish the print size of this book could have been bigger as some of the illustrations are unfortunately split by the spine. That said, this still comes recommended.
