Warning : The following post contains nudity/adult content.

Méchanhumanimal was an art exhibition held at the Musee des art et metiers in Paris in 2013 showcasing the work of renowned French comic artist Enki Bilal. This is the official catalog art book for the exhibition.

I discovered this mint new copy of the book while browsing at the excellent Aoyama Book Center in Omotesando during my Tokyo spring trip earlier this year. Enki Bilal’s art style is very distinctive and instantly recognizable, and as I flipped through the pages of the book I realized quickly that I had stumbled upon something good.

The book features around a hundred original pieces of work dating from the 1970s to the present day, collected under a series of headings that reflect recurring themes in his work: Human passions; Animals, Monsters and hybrids; Conflict; Machine dreams; and The planet. There are also extracts from his BD work and other graphic projects, as well as a series of new paintings that he painted especially for the exhibition.

There is surprisingly very little information about the exhibition that I could find online, with just this one coverage here.

Availability – This one I reckon is very hard to get a copy of; it’s certainly not available on Amazon or any other big online bookstore chain, and the only listing ( which requires a special order ) can be found here.

I cannot profess myself a fan of Enki Bilal’s work, not because I don’t like his art, but because I know woefully little about it. If any reader here can give me some recommendations on any of his comic work, I’ll be much obliged.

HAYATO

The Nikopol Trilogy is a perfect starting point for his body of work. It’s an esoteric, euro sci-fi story in the vein of those by other contemporary authors such as Moebius (Incal, the world of Edena) or Juan Gimenez (Metabarons, the fourth power). The series got a live action film adaptation in the early 2000s called “Immortal – Ad Vitam” wich was pretty decent for a European green-screen film back then…

Other notable works I’d recommend are “Exterminator 17” and “The Stone Ship” (published in English under the name “Progress!”).

Hope you manage to find and enjoy them!

HAYATO – Thank you so much for the recommendations ! And yes, I do remember the movie Immortal – Ad Vitam, I actually like it !

I’m definitely going to check out all your recommendations, cheers !

Hi, I would also recommend, within his body of work that has been translated into English: Monster, The Hunting Party, and Legends of Today.

Méchanhumanimal is available on several European Amazon sites, such as Spain and France.

Other very good books about his work—more in the nature of catalogs—that are available on Amazon (Europe) and that I would recommend are Graphite in Progress: Enki Bilal T02 and Enki Bilal by Serge Lemoine.
