The Art Of Ready Player One Book Review

Despite general audiences’ somewhat lukewarm response to Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One film, I kinda enjoyed it. I think this was aided by the fact that I watched it with no preconceived notions or expectations of what it would turn out to be, having never read Ernest Cline’s original novel, on which is film is based on.

What we can all agree on I think, are the amazing visuals showcased throughout the film, and these are extensively documented in this art book. Spread across 150 pages, the contents include concept art and character designs for the leads of the film, the villains, secondary characters as well as tons of art work for the numerous giant set pieces. The works, really. Check it out below –

There is just so much going on visually in this movie that I’m sure I missed plenty of details and easter eggs during my first viewing, and I look forward to revisiting it again on blu-ray soon. This art book serves up an excellent visual documentation of the making of and is a great companion to the film.

I still have yet to see the movie, but I’m definitely interested in this book. The latest issue of CINEFEX had an article on READY PLAYER ONE and they featured some of the art for the film, and I liked what I saw.

But I wonder if they’ll have illustrations for the RX-78 Gundam in this book, since that was featured in the film?

Marc – Yes it does, I definitely saw some when browsing through the book. A former colleague of mine at ILM worked on the Gundam shots in the movie, I’m so jealous haha.
