This new Masaaki Yuasa Sketchbook collects a huge compilation of doodles, concept art and visual ideas by the renowned Japanese anime director who bought us the highly acclaimed Devilman Crybaby.

While not nearly as voluminous as the sketchbook released in 2016, this book stills boasts over 200 pages of content focusing on the director’s more recently films like Lu Over The Wall, The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl, Devilman Crybaby, the Kickstarter shortfilm Kickheart and more. Also included are 2 transcribed conversations between Masaaki Yuasa and Katsuhiro Otomo / Mamoru Oshii.

I was looking forward to the concept art work from Devilman Crybaby, but sadly only 4 paltry pages are featured in this book; I have a hunch a more dedicated art book is in the works which will do the film more justice. Hopefully I’m correct !

That said, this book, just like the previous 2016 sketchbook is still a fascinating look at Masaaki Yuasa’s visual concepts, ideas as well as the color design in his work. Recommended.
