Despite having worked at Sunrise Animation Studios ( the homebase behind the Gundam IP ) for almost 2 years back in the day, I profess to knowing embarrassingly little about the Gundam franchise; I am however, a very big fan of animator/manga artist/director Yoshikazu Yasuhiko‘s art work. This art book is a scrumptious collection of cover illustrations drawn by Yoshikazu for the monthly magazine Gundam Ace, showcasing some 76 pieces of stunning art work, some of them previously unpublished. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s art style and character designs are very distinct and easily recognizable; he is also the artist behind Venus Wars as well as Crusher Joe ( read my review for the art book here ). This Gundam art book is filled with fantastic illustrations from cover to cover and gets my highest recommendations; and this coming from someone who is not even a big Gundam fan !

This is really cool. I have the full run of the hardback English translation of Gundam: The Origin that Vertical published a number of years ago (really nice editions too). I’ll put this on my list of artbooks to pick-up soon.

Well, I am a big Gundam fan…:), but I am also a huge fan of Yasuhiro’s work. I’ve seen some of these illustrations before in GUNDAM ACE magazine and in the hardcover translation volumes of GUNDAM: THE ORIGIN manga that Chris mentioned. They are beautiful works, but what else would we expect from Yasuhiro?
