In This Corner Of The World is a critically acclaimed animated film directed by Katabuchi Sunao, based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Kono Fumiyo. Released in 2016 after a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign to cover its production costs, the story follows the life of young woman named Suzu who experiences the hardships and horrors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during WWII.
I have previously reviewed the official art book for the film here back in 2018; this new book is a volume dedicated purely to just the background art pieces created for the film, and was published in early 2020 after an extended version of the film was released in cinemas in December 2019.
Showcasing over 300 pieces of stunning background art from the film, the landscape format of the book allows for bigger reproductions of the plates and really show off the amazing detail in every illustrated piece; certainly on par in quality with the very best background art from big animation studios like Ghibli. Also included are interviews with the film director Katabuchi Sunao as well as the art director Kosuke Hayashi.
In This Corner Of The World is an excellent, albeit poignant film, and one of the key visual highlights of the movie are the gorgeous background art. This fantastic volume collects over 300 pieces painted for the film and is a perfect way to appreciate these beautiful background art. Highly recommended.
I also recommend checking out the official art book for the film.
