The June issue of Japanese visual arts magazine Geijutsu Shincho (芸術新潮) is a special issue showcasing the art of renowned animator/manga artist Yasuhiko Yoshikazu (安彦良和), whose long list of credits include MS Gundam, Venus Wars, Crusher Joe and many more. This publication release is in conjunction with the Yasuhiko Yoshikazu art exhibition taking place at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum Of Art from June to September 2024.
With the coverage on the artist taking up about 70% of the magazine’s page count, the contents are pretty extensive, including a showcase of the artist’s painting technique/process for the cover art piece, extensive discussion of his life and work as well as an interview.
Image above – I’m always delighted when Geijutsu Shincho do specials on artists and also show their workspace/studio. This 2012 issue on AKIRA creator Katsuhiro Otomo also shows his atelier/studio.
I’ve always enjoyed Yasuhiko Yoshikazu’s style of art, especially for the manga Venus Wars as well as his many illustrations for MS Gundam which are collected in this excellent art book. As with all periodic publications, this issue will likely not be reprinted once it sells out, so definitely pick it up while it is available if you do want a copy.
I am also looking forward to picking up this newly published ( nov 2023 ) Yasuhiko Yoshikazu art book for review at a later time.

I have always a deep respect for the artists that can master the “old way” of making paintings. I think there is more “soul” in these paintings if compared to the ones made with a tablet or PC. Every step must be made carefully, because making corrections can be complex…

Heartwarming to see he is still productive at his age.
I wish Katsuhiro OTOMO (who is younger) would be as active as him.

Okay, this is now on my “Need to get ASAP!” list. I’ve been a fan of Yas’ work for years (and like you, I loved his VENUS WARS manga). He’s master, all right, and one of my influences, plus he heavily influenced the work of Mikimoto, ANOTHER influence of mine.
Great to see that he’s still going strong and honestly, his work continues to stand head and shoulders above the rest. The best thing about Yas’ work is that you can tell that it’s him–no one else has that style.

Marc – Interesting, I need to do some research on “Mikimoto”, do you happen to have any links that I can check out ?
Totally agree on the uniqueness of his art style and how distinctive it is !
