Eiko Ishioka (石岡 瑛子 1938-2012) was a Japanese art director, costume designer, and graphic designer known for her work in stage, screen, advertising, and print media. She is notably renowned for her Academy award winning costume design for Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 horror film Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
This book is the official catalogue for the retrospective exhibition held at 5 different museums across Japan, with the final one taking place in the summer of 2025 at the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & Design.
The exhibition showcases around 500 works including posters, commercials, artwork and sketches with a primary focus on the work Eiko created in Tokyo from the 1960s through to the 1980s, which caused a sensation at the time, complemented by Eiko’s words that convey her intense and lifelong passion for design.
These insightful words are presented in this catalog book ( in both English and Japanese language ) alongside a select collection of her poster and graphic design work.
Compared to the catalog book for her earlier exhibition ‘Blood, Sweat, And Tears – A Life Of Design‘ ( read my review here ), this one for I Design takes a more intellectual approach by encouraging the viewer to examine and appreciate Eiko Ishioka’s work through her documented words.
The catalog is a small, almost pocket sized book fitting for the low price tag, but if you’re looking for a bigger book with a more substantial collection of her visual art work, I would recommend Blood, Sweat, And Tears – A Life Of Design instead.
