Creating Worlds - Cinematic Art Of Dylan Cole Book Review

World building for fantasy and sci-fi films is an extremely challenging endeavor; requiring not just considerable technical and artistic skills to competently craft imagery that would awe and captivate audiences, but also because the concept art created also lay the foundation for VFX artists such as myself to realize their unique vision, most often through CGI these days.

And this is why I have nothing but respect for concept and visdev ( visual development ) artists such as Dylan Cole, a renowned name in the cinematic concept art scene with a most impressive portfolio. This beautiful hardcover volume showcases the artist’s stunning work for movies like James Cameron’s Avatar films, Alice in Wonderland, Tron : Legacy, Maleficent, Alita : Battle Angel and more. The landscape format of the book is really well suited to show off many of the wide vista concept art pieces, and there are also a few select pieces that folds out as a double-page spread that are particularly impressive.

Simply put, none of the films showcased in this book would have looked half as good without the boundless imagination and artistic prowess of concept artists like Dylan Cole. Most audiences only ever experience the final realized version when they watch the movie, but this book provides a unique opportunity to appreciate and study the original concept art behind them all. Highly recommended.

You pretty much have to no-life your craft to be able to produce in that industry at this level. You’re not going on World of Warcraft raids or binging Netflix shows while you’re developing your skills . Kudos to him and everyone working hard in creative fields!
