Masters Of Fx - Visual + Special Effects Book Review

Masters Of Fx – Behind the Scenes with Geniuses of Visual and Special Effects explores the world and evolution of special ( practical ) and visual ( CG ) effects in film-making through interviews with 16 leading effects pioneers including Chris Corbould, Richard Edlund, Scott Farrar, Paul Franklin, John Knoll, Dennis Muren and more.

I’ve had the great fortune of working under 2 of the interviewees in the book, John Knoll on Rango and Scott Farrar on Transformers 3 & 4.

While the ever changing and improving technology will always impact how visual effects are made, at the end of the day it will still require great artistry to drive and shape the aesthetics. The interviews in this book will allow the reader to better understand the technical aspects of visual effects, and more importantly the artistic and creative methods of these brilliant artists.

An insightful, illuminating read and a great source of inspiration for people working in the industry as well as anyone interested in visual effects and film-making. Recommended.

Also published by Focal Press is the series of filmmaking books called Filmcraft ( Editing, Costume Design, Directing, Production Design ), all of which I highly recommend.
