Cinematographer Sir Roger Deakins Breaks Down His Most Iconic Films - GQ

In this splendidly insightful 27 minutes interview, Academy Award winning cinematographer Roger Deakins shares with us the work he has done for some of the most highly acclaimed films in recent cinema history like Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, No Country For Old Man, Sicario, 1917, Bladerunner 2049 and more. Check it out below –

When I first started working in the film/animation industry, one of my aspirations was to become a cinematographer, and although that never happened, many of the core skills and knowledge are still integral to my current job as a visual effects lighting technical director, and Sir Roger Deakins’ work continue to impress and inspire me.

I am super fortunate to have worked on 2 animated films where he served as visual consultant/cinematographer, namely the Academy Award winning Rango ( 2011 ) as well as Vivo ( 2021 ). During meetings, he is ever so humble and down to earth, and always so passionate to share his experience and knowledge to help us make better looking films.

One interesting aspect of Roger Deakins’ cinematography work is that unlike some other DPs whose work display a strong personal visual style that is highly recognizable ( and there’s nothing wrong with this ), his work is for lack of a better work, “neutral”. If you were not previously aware that he shot the film, you might not know that he was the cinematographer, because his craft is purely in service to the vision of the director that he is working with.
