The Art Of Ghost In The Shell goes behind the scenes of Rupert Sander’s live-action remake of the famed anime through the incredibly concept art and production design by the award winning Weta Workshop. One of the main concept artists who worked on the film is Ash Thorp, the creator of Project 2501 : Homage To Ghost In The Shell, and whom I had the pleasure of interviewing in this older article about his work.
There’s a wealth of material in the book that runs the gamut from character design ( the highlight being the Geisha robot ), weapons and vehicle designs including the Spider Tank bot, as well as many “world-building” concept art pieces used to create the psychedelic colored, hologram infused futuristic city based on the city of HongKong.
There’s also a short section near the end of the book that covers the cinematography of the film.
The live-action Ghost In The Shell is a visually arresting movie filled with beautifully filmed sequences. The sheer artistry and creativity that went into building a world that is respectful to the original material is clearly evident, and this art book is a great way to explore all that. Recommended.
