Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré ( 1832 – 1883 ) was a French artist, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor. Often called “the most illustrious of illustrators”, Gustave Doré prolific portfolio ran the gamut from art work in editions of the Bible, Dante’s Inferno, Poe’s The Raven, The Adventures of Don Quixote, and even in Hollywood, from King Kong to Seven.
This comprehensive monograph Gustave Dore 1832-1883: Master of Imagination showcases a huge collection of his art work spanning over 300 pages, many of which appeared at the exhibitions in Musée d’Orsay, Paris in 2011 and at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa in 2014.
(above right) “Christmas Eve”, done with watercolour and gouache highlights, on pencil underdrawing. Gustave Doré started his career at the age of 15 as a caricaturist for the magazine Journal pour rire. He once commented : “I’m sorry to have made a mere 100,000 drawings by the age 33”.
(above) Puss In Boots & The Little Red Riding Hood. Doré was equally adept at illustrations for children’s books as he is for more sombre subjects like Dante’s Inferno.
(above & below) The artist’s paintings on religious themes are sweepingly epic, moody and visually powerful.
A master artist of many trades, this hardcover volume collects a bountiful serving of Gustave Doré’s masterpieces for easy appreciation and study/reference. Highly recommended.

This was a great show in Musée d’Orsay. There was another book very thin called “L’Imaginaire” in A3 I bought. It’s terrific to see Doré’s work in such scale.
